I was stayying in Accaroli a beach town right on the ocean with my partner Joe. We woke up to the sounds of the waves crashing and feel asleep with them like a lullaby. We went for long walks on the beach each day and the kids loved it. One night the wind picked up and for a few days the ocean looked agitated and raging – we spent the next few days inside out of the rain and as soon as the same came up we walked down to the beach again…
We were met by a sight that stunned us all… The heavy winds had brought to shore everything the ocean did no longer want. As if it had thrown it right back at us. I dont want it – you have it!
The beach was filled with plastic debris of all kinds from bottle tops to ear cleaners and all kinds of plastic bottles and millions of tiny pieces of plastic and micro plastics.. It was so sad. We started a beach cleanup with the kids and spent the rest of the week picking up plastic that otherwise would be flushed back into the ocean… It all resulted in our plastic oceans project that also resulted in a Childrens book to help save the oceans.
